Online marketers often begin analyzing their website by looking at design, keywords, and basic copy principles. But experienced marketers often get suspicious when someone seems to be working hard without seeing results. Everything seems to look fine. If the website were a student project, it would earn a perfect grade. But someone clients and buyers are not arriving, much less spending money.
Often this problem signals a lack of energy. When you force yourself to put a site together and promote it, your boredom shines through. Visitors sense there is no fire behind the message.
When you talk to the business owner behind the website, you often hear frustration immediately. The business owner often says, "When will I start to see a return on my investment? I want to have time to enjoy life. I want to write poetry, work on my art projects and enjoy time for travel."
Coaches say they can hear a business owner's voice change when they start talking about what they really want. They may say something like, "I want to help people deepen their creativity." Or they may say, "I have a story to tell. I want to write a novel."
Business owners often hesitate to follow those dreams. They feel they can see income faster from what they know. They feel they need to do something practical first, then do the work that comes out of their passion. In other words, this website is a day job.
The problem is, a business doesn't operate like a day job, especially if you are new. When you feel you need a day job, look for a gig where you get paid even if nothing lights your inner fire. You can probably teach a class, make coffee or balance checking accounts without feeling the slightest hint of passion or excitement. As long as you don't absolutely hate the work, and as long as your working conditions are bearable, you will be able to function and you will get paid.
Your Internet business needs to come from your own passion. But be sure you understand the idea of "passion." You might decide to promote an information product on dog training because you have a passion for dogs. Or you may be a totally cat person or even someone who is totally baffled by the whole "companion animal" concept.
But you still might decide to create and promote a dog training information product. You may be totally intrigued by the challenge of finding niche markets and profiting from them. That's also a passion.
The problem comes when you try to invest energy in something you feel you "should" do. When you have an Internet business, you need to play with fire. When you just feel lukewarm and resistant, change the label to Day Job and evaluate how you choose to spend your time.
